2026: the rise of AI agents

2026 is shaping up as the year of AI agents: autonomous systems that can conduct complete conversations across any imaginable channel. This promises massive scale, efficiency, and speed for marketing and sales processes. At the same time, it brings a fundamental challenge: trust cannot simply be automated.

When AI talks to AI: the paradox of automated outreach

We’re seeing a pattern emerge that we recognize from the era of mass radio and TV advertising. Noise inevitably leads to filters. We happily pay streaming services to avoid ads.

There’s now talk of information overload. Outreach has become cheap, lists are easy to scrape, and AI agents effortlessly send thousands of messages per day via email and LinkedIn.

So a counterreaction emerges. Because we’re being bombarded with automated messages we often don’t need, something paradoxical happens: we deploy AI agents ourselves to filter our inbox and social feeds.

The outcome is predictable. We end up in a scenario where agents talk to agents, while the (potential) customer has long since checked out.

Why humanity ultimately wins in sales

Despite technological advances, deals are still closed on the basis of human factors:

  • Context and timing: Knowing when a message is relevant instead of an unwelcome approach.
  • Trust and relationship: The foundation of every commercial conversation.
  • Feeling and brand experience: Elements an algorithm can simulate, but not possess.

How do you deploy AI successfully?

The core of the problem isn’t the technology, but often the lack of a clear strategy; automation without a plan only leads to more volume, not more relevance. Organizations that deploy AI successfully strengthen human interaction instead of replacing it.

Ask yourself the following questions before activating an AI agent:

  1. Context: What information is needed for the contact to feel logical to the customer?
  2. Relevance: Is this outreach actually valuable to the recipient at this moment?
  3. Value: Where does the AI strengthen the process while keeping trust intact?

Choose attention over mass automation

The real challenge of AI in sales and marketing isn’t to automate everything that can be automated, but to deliberately choose actions that add value. Use AI to make commerce smarter and more effective, but only when attention and creativity lead, not volume.
